Vitolins Edges Out Lembergs in Ventspils Election
“Latvia and Ventspils” secures majority despite low voter turnout.
In a notable shift, Jānis Vitolins has surpassed Aivars Lembergs in popularity, according to recent election results in Ventspils. The “Latvia and Ventspils” party secured a majority in the city council.
Election Results Overview
After votes were tallied at all 13 polling stations, “Latvia and Ventspils” garnered 47.15% of the electorate’s support,leading the race. Trailing behind, another party secured 16.87% of the total vote.
The “united List” (AS) obtained 15.88% support from voters, while the combined list of “For” and “New Unity” received 7.72%.The “stability” party managed to secure 5.67% of the votes cast.
Council Mandates Assigned
“latvia and Ventspils” will hold a majority in the council, possessing seven out of the 13 mandates. These mandates are assigned to Jānis Vitolins, Aivars Lembergs, Didzis Ošenieks, Guntis Blumbergs, Aigo gutmanis, Jacob MacPans, and Andris Grigalis.
The National Alliance (NA) secured two mandates, which will be held by Vita Hermansone and Ingus Zariņš. Similarly, Aivis Landmanis and Dzintars Kantsons also obtained two mandates. “About”/JV will have Bruno Jurshevich representing them, and “stability” will be represented by Denis Abramov.
Other Parties’ Performance
Several other parties in Ventspils failed to reach the 5% threshold required to gain representation in the council.
Low Voter Turnout
Voter participation in ventspils was relatively low, with only 40.3% of eligible voters casting their ballots. This is lower than the national average for municipal elections. According to the Central Election Commission, the average voter turnout in Latvia’s municipal elections is around 46% (CVK.lv).
Previous Council Composition
In the previous term, “Latvia and Ventspils” also held seven mandates. “Latvia’s Development,” along with the joint list of regions of Latvia and “New Unity,” each held two mandates.The New conservative Party and the National Association each had one mandate.
Technical Issues Delay Vote Counting
The vote counting process for the 2025 municipal elections faced technical difficulties, causing delays in the final results.
