VDOT Announces Early Reopening of I-64 HRBT Westbound After Repaving
Westbound Lanes Cleared Ahead of Monday Rush
The westbound lanes of the I-64 Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel reopened early Saturday evening following the completion of initial travel lane repaving, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) reported. Crews finished milling, paving, and pavement markings on one of the two westbound travel lanes ahead of schedule, restoring the key regional connection for motorists well in advance of the Monday morning commute.
Continuous Crews Beat the Weekend Storm
Operations wrapped up after crews worked through Friday night and Saturday. Heavy rain forecast for Sunday prompted the early reopening, as wet weather conditions would have prevented workers from completing the remaining westbound travel lane to the required quality standards within the weekend closure window, according to VDOT.
Weather Conditions Affect Asphalt Paving in Tunnels
Paving operations inside the tunnels are sensitive to outside weather conditions because heavy rain lowers asphalt transport temperatures and introduces moisture at tunnel approaches. Asphalt requires specific temperature ranges and a dry surface to bond and compact properly for a durable roadway surface.
Next Phases Target Eastbound Span
The remaining westbound repaving work will be completed during a subsequent second directional closure weekend, as originally planned if needed. Meanwhile, VDOT has scheduled up to two planned weekends of full directional closures eastbound at the HRBT toward Norfolk for repaving later this month.

VDOT Sets November Backup Dates for Closures
Additional backup weekend dates are set for November 6 through November 9, and November 13 through November 16, if needed. Motorists can check VDOT’s official project webpage at vdot.virginia.gov/HRBTclosures and social media channels for schedule updates, while the 511Virginia website and mobile app provide real-time traffic information.
