Shane Gillis Faces Backlash Over SNL Monologue And Live F-Bomb Blunder
Shane Gillis hosted Saturday Night Live on October 11, 2026, dropping an unedited F-bomb during a Dr. Seuss sketch and later apologizing, though viewers directed heavier criticism at his opening monologue jokes about women at the gym.
Gillis Uses Expletive During Live Dr. Seuss Sketch
The 38-year-old comedian appeared as the host for his third time on the NBC sketch comedy series. During a Dr. Seuss-themed sketch, Gillis played a concerned son trying to stop Sam-I-Am, played by Andrew Dismukes, from badgering his father, played by Mikey Day, into eating green eggs and ham, as the Independent reported. When Dismukes kept pushing the breakfast choice, Gillis blurted out, “Bro, it’s a non-starter. He said he doesn’t f***ing — jeez — like ’em.”
The expletive made it through the live broadcast before censors could catch it, though clips posted online later had the word edited out. DailyMail.com noted that the slip left both the cast and audience visibly stunned, with some audience members letting out small gasps. Day later ad-libbed a callback during the sketch, calling Gillis a loser and slamming him for using a bad word before kicking him out of the house. Gillis went along with the ad-lib, replying, “Yes, I did.” Near the end of the show, during the goodnights segment alongside musical guest Rosalia, Gillis addressed the blunder directly by telling the audience, “Sorry about earlier.”

Monologue Remarks Draw Social Media Backlash
While the swearing drew immediate on-air embarrassment, the heavier social media backlash focused on remarks Gillis made during his opening monologue. The comedian spoke about activewear and fitness routines, telling the audience, “I haven’t been to the gym in so long, I didn’t realize women just dress like whores now.” prompting groans and jeers from the crowd.
Viewers took to X to voice their frustration, with one writing, “I dont know what turns my stomach more, the fact that Shane Gillis was on Saturday Night Live tonight and said women at the gym ‘dress like whores’ or that there was people in that audience who found his disgusting bit of so-called humor funny.” Another viewer pointed out, “When Shane Gillis apologized, it took me too long to realize it was for saying f*** and not calling women whores.”
Gillis Compares Hairline to Hitler During Monologue
The monologue also included a joke where Gillis compared his receding hairline to Adolf Hitler. “I’ll tell you thing that I’m really bothered by is I’ve balded directly into an Adolf Hitler haircut,” he said, according to DailyMail.com, noting that the front falls down when he gives speeches. “You’re either gay or you’re Hitler, and isn’t that where we’re at as a country?”
The appearance marked another chapter in Gillis’s volatile relationship with the sketch show. NBC hired him as a cast member in 2019 alongside Bowen Yang and Chloe Fineman, but fired him before his debut after old podcast clips surfaced of him making homophobic and racist jokes. At the time of that firing, Gillis issued a statement describing himself as a comedian who pushes boundaries and apologizing to anyone actually offended by his past comedy. TMZ noted that despite that history, Gillis has now hosted the show three times.
