Vargem Handball Teams Face Piracicaba in Interior League Matches

The cadete women’s and men’s handball teams of Vargem Grande do Sul traveled to Piracicaba on Sunday, October 27, for their penultimate matches in the Liga de Handebol do Interior. Both squads faced the tournament hosts in tough matchups that tested their defensive grit and offensive efficiency.

Defensive Battles Against Piracicaba

In the opening match of the day, the Vargem women’s team confronted a Piracicaba squad that remains undefeated and holds the title of current league champion. Vargem fell by a score of 23 to 8, but applied strong defensive pressure to make the match difficult for the hosts. However, heavy marking from the opposing defense stifled Vargem’s attack, limiting their scoring opportunities throughout the contest.

With a lot of application in defense, they managed to make the opponent’s game difficult, said professor Juliano Garcia, who oversees the handball modality in Vargem. Already in the attack, they suffered a lot with the heavy marking of the opponents and could not score many goals.

The men’s team also faced Piracicaba in the second encounter of the day, dropping a narrow 23 to 21 decision. A slow start allowed the home side to build an early lead before Vargem tightened its defense and increased pressure. Ten clear scoring chances went unconverted after hitting the goalpost or drawing stops from the Piracicaba goalkeeper, who earned player-of-the-match honors. The final margin left a strong impression given Piracicaba’s competitive history against top league contenders.

Youthful Potential in the Sub-16 and Sub-14 Roster

Garcia noted that the current roster relies heavily on younger players who are still developing within the lower age brackets. Out of the entire team, only six athletes meet the exact age requirement for the sub-16 category. The remainder of the squad plays foundational minutes in the sub-14 division, where the program is mounting a successful campaign this season.

We had the expectation of just gaining experience this year, but we came close to qualification, Garcia stated regarding the sub-16 team’s trajectory. Vargem will close out the regional league schedule with a final fixture against Botucatu.

Upcoming Regional Copa São Paulo Matches

Before concluding the Liga do Interior schedule, Vargem Grande do Sul will host the regional quarterfinals of the Copa São Paulo de Handebol on Monday, October 5, at the Centro Educacional Esportivo José Cortez. The women’s team will face Atibaia, while the men’s team matches up against Jundiaí. Both visiting programs actively compete in the Campeonato Paulista.

This appearance marks a milestone for the municipality, as it is the first time Vargem has advanced to the regional phase of the tournament. Previous entries by the men’s team in 2014 and 2025 were eliminated during the pre-regional rounds. The ultimate phase of the Copa São Paulo brings together the eight regional champions in Tietê.
