UW-Whitewater Reports Third Consecutive Year of Enrollment Growth, Eyes 13,000 Student Goal
WHITEWATER, WI – UW-Whitewater has announced a continued surge in student enrollment, marking the third consecutive year of growth for the university. The increase signals a strong rebound and aspiring future goals for the institution, which is aiming for a total student body of 13,000 by Fall 2028 and 800 students at its Rock County campus, alongside an 82% student retention rate.
The university’s success comes as a welcome advancement, notably when viewed against the backdrop of pre-COVID enrollment figures. While specific archival data wasn’t promptly available, the current growth demonstrates a clear upward trajectory.
“We are marking three consecutive years of enrollment growth,” Chancellor Corey A. king stated. “This achievement moves us closer to our long-term goal of 13,000 students by Fall 2028 – a target that reflects our continued efforts to grow responsibly and strategically. We see the increase as affirmation that our focus on student access and success, career preparation, inclusivity and affordability continues to resonate with students and their families.”
The influx of students is bolstering the campus community and reinforcing the importance of residential life. According to university officials, full residence halls contribute to student academic success, overall learning, and retention.
“As a residential campus, we know that living in the residence halls enhances students’ academic success, overall learning, and retention,” said UW-Whitewater representative Tumbarello. “Enrollment growth helps us keep our halls full, which strengthens our community and supports the university’s mission.”
The appeal of UW-Whitewater extends beyond its campus environment. Freshman Jordan Whitsett, from Schofield, cited the “friendly and supportive community” as a key factor in their decision to attend. This sentiment aligns with national recognition; the Wall Street Journal has ranked UW-W as having the No. 1 student experience in Wisconsin.
Over 3,000 students chose UW-Whitewater this year, despite competition from the 13 other UW System universities and numerous other Midwest institutions. University leadership attributes this success to the institution’s commitment to providing an affordable, high-quality education.
“Our graduates go on to make meaningful contributions in the workforce and in their communities,” King added.
tumbarello echoed this sentiment, stating, “[Our enrollment increase] demonstrates that Wisconsin and our neighboring states recognize UW-whitewater as an academic powerhouse… Having worked on campus for many years, it’s rewarding to see the value of our work and the excellence of our institution reflected in this growth.”
