US Tech Sector Loses 2.351 Trillion Dollars in October

US Tech Sector Loses 2.351 Trillion Dollars in October

November 2, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

The U.S. technology sector erased 2.351 trillion dollars in market capitalization during October, driven by investor skepticism over heavy artificial intelligence infrastructure spending and deteriorating free cash flows among Big Tech firms. While the Nasdaq Composite fell 2.86% to 25,437 points on Friday and lost 2% over the week, the broader market showed a divergence between tech-heavy indices and steadier traditional equities.

AI Infrastructure Costs Damage Company Cash Flows

The root cause of the market sell-off was not a drop in global demand, but the heavy capital model demanded by artificial intelligence infrastructure, according to Gabriela Siller, director of analysis at Banco Base. Markets shifted from rewarding announcements about AI development to demanding tangible returns on investment.

The accumulation of massive capital expenditures for data centers and processors directly damaged the free cash flows of issuing companies. Unsettled timelines for monetizing these outlays triggered downward revisions in valuation multiples.

Alphabet, Google and YouTube’s parent company, led the losses by shedding 758,323 million dollars in October, with its shares falling 18.67%. NVIDIA followed with a loss of 572,134 million dollars as its stock retreated 10.39%. Meta Platforms erased 275,338 million dollars, Intel lost 256,926 million dollars, and Micron Technology dropped 201,913 million dollars in market value.

Additional technology firms also saw steep declines. Advanced Micro Devices lost 174,610 million dollars, Space Exploration Technologies dropped 158,962 million dollars, Broadcom fell 119,866 million dollars, Lam Research dropped 112,382 million dollars, and Applied Materials erased 96,255 million dollars.

Dow Gains While S&P 500 Declines in October

Wall Street operated at two distinct speeds during October. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.85% to 51,770.31 points on Friday, while the S&P 500 dropped 0.57% to 7,580.07 units. For the month, the Dow gained 1.69% while the S&P 500 declined 0.93%.

The Dow stayed positive due to its lower exposure to technology sector volatility, maintaining a 7.71% gain for the year. Meanwhile, hyperscalers including Meta, Amazon, and Alphabet raised their spending forecasts while competing to expand artificial intelligence infrastructure. That rising cost structure raised concerns about companies relying heavily on debt financing.

John Bilton, global head of multi-asset strategy solutions at JPMorgan Asset Management, noted that demand for data remains high despite the valuation pressures. Even so, analysts at Monex Casa de Bolsa warned that rising interest rates will make corporate financing more expensive, compressing risk premiums and increasing return demands for equities.

Future Market Catalysts

The future performance of the index will depend on the resilience of the U.S. economy against tariff risks from U.S. President Donald Trump, geopolitical volatility, and the monetary policy uncertainty surrounding the Federal Reserve. Analysts continue to debate whether earnings revisions will stabilize or if capital expenditure will continue to outpace near-term cash generation.
