US Sends 3,000 Paratroopers to Middle East: Iran Oil Island Attack Looms?

March 25, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

The U.S. Military is deploying elements of the 82nd Airborne Division to the Middle East, according to multiple reports, as tensions escalate with Iran. The move comes after U.S. Forces struck targets on Kharg Island, a critical hub for Iran’s oil industry, on March 14th, and amid growing concerns over the security of the Strait of Hormuz.

Fox News first reported that the commander of the 82nd Airborne Division and members of his staff have received orders for deployment. The Wall Street Journal subsequently confirmed the report, adding that further deployment orders are expected in the coming hours. While no decision has been made to actively engage the deployed forces, their presence signals a heightened state of readiness.

The potential deployment involves a brigade-sized element of the division, approximately 3,000 soldiers, according to the New York Times. This “quick reaction force” is designed to be deployable within 18 hours, positioning the U.S. For a rapid response to any escalation. A potential mission for the force is an assault on Kharg Island, though officials have not confirmed this.

The 82nd Airborne Division, based in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, is one of the most highly-regarded units in the U.S. Military. Established in 1917, the division has a storied history, participating in major operations during World War II, including the Normandy landings and the Battle of the Bulge. It also saw action in Vietnam, the 1991 Gulf War to liberate Kuwait, and the 2003 invasion of Iraq. More recently, elements of the division have been deployed to Afghanistan.

The deployment of the 82nd Airborne follows a U.S. Strike on Kharg Island, described by President Trump as obliterating “every MILITARY target” on the island. However, U.S. And Iranian officials stated the strikes did not impact the island’s oil infrastructure. Trump issued an ultimatum following the attack, warning of further action if Iran continues to interfere with commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil supplies.

Kharg Island is strategically significant, processing approximately 90% of Iran’s crude oil exports and storing millions of barrels of oil. Analysts have warned that any attempt to attack or seize the island carries substantial risk, potentially prompting a sustained increase in already soaring oil prices. Iran has warned of retaliation against oil companies working with the United States in the Middle East should its oil and energy infrastructure be targeted.

The U.S. Military has also been positioning Marines in the region, with approximately 2,500 expected to arrive this week, according to the New York Times. The potential for a coordinated operation involving both the Marines and the 82nd Airborne remains unclear. The quick reaction force nature of the Airborne division, however, lacks the heavy equipment, such as armored vehicles, that would provide protection in the event of a sustained Iranian counterattack.

As of Wednesday, March 25, 2026, the White House has not issued a statement regarding the deployment of the 82nd Airborne Division beyond confirming the movement of personnel. Iran’s Supreme National Security Council has yet to publicly respond to the reported troop movements.
