US Park Police Officer Shot in Washington DC: Injuries Not Life-Threatening
A U.S. Park Police officer was shot Monday evening in Southeast Washington, D.C., officials said. The shooting occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. On Queens Stroll Place, according to a statement from the Park Police.
The injured officer was transported to a local hospital and is currently receiving treatment. A spokesperson for the U.S. Park Police told ABC News that the officer’s injuries are not life-threatening.
News of the shooting prompted immediate responses from federal and local officials. Attorney General Pam Bondi stated on X, formerly known as Twitter, that she had spoken with D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and Metropolitan Police Chief Jeffery Carroll, receiving a briefing on the incident. Bondi urged the public to “Please pray for the officer’s recovery.”
Mayor Bowser also released a statement, expressing gratitude for the swift response of law enforcement and first responders. “Tonight, a member of the United States Park Police was shot in our community,” Bowser said. “The officer was taken by helicopter to a local hospital and treated for his injuries, which are thankfully non-life-threatening. Our prayers are with the officer for a quick recovery and we are grateful for all our law enforcement officers and first responders for their quick response.”
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation. Bowser indicated that further information would be released as it becomes available. The FBI has confirmed its involvement in the investigation, according to NewsNation.
The U.S. Park Police are responsible for protecting national parks and monuments in the Washington, D.C. Area, including the National Mall and Memorial Parks. The incident marks the latest in a series of shootings involving law enforcement officers in the region.
