US Midterms Become Most Expensive Election in History With .6 Billion Spent

US Midterms Become Most Expensive Election in History With $11.6 Billion Spent

November 1, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Spending on the 2026 United States midterm elections has surged past $11.6 billion, eclipsing the financial footprint of the 2024 presidential race and setting a new record for American political campaigns. Federal Election Commission data and AdImpact tracking analyzed by Massimo Gaggi for Corriere della Sera and reported on open.online show that independent committees account for $2.7 billion of that total, fueling a massive wave of political advertising as voters head to the polls.

The Supreme Court Ruling That Unleashed Unlimited Funds

The financial escalation stems directly from the 2010 Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v. The decision cleared the way for SuperPACs to raise and spend unlimited sums, provided they remain formally uncoordinated with individual candidates.

European democracies maintain strict statutory caps on political spending. By comparison, the total expenditure for France’s 2022 presidential election equivalent sat at roughly $90 million, while British general elections cost marginally more. In the United States, wealthy donors now deploy sums that dwarf entire national election budgets in Western Europe.

Billionaires Funnel Record Sums to Competing Parties

Elon Musk leads all donors, contributing at least $446 million to support Republican candidates, according to open.online. That figure is nearly double the amount Musk gave during the 2024 presidential contest. Additional major conservative donors include the Uihlein family, who lead the industrial supply giant Uline and contributed 150 million dollars, and financier Jeff Yass, who provided 110 million dollars.

On the Democratic side, George Soros anchors party support with 102 million dollars in contributions, followed by former New York City Michael Bloomberg at 84 million dollars. Technology executive Reid Hoffman, a co-founder of LinkedIn, invested approximately 41 million dollars to assist Democratic candidates.

SuperPACs Outpace Direct Candidate Fundraising in Tight Senate and House Races

Independent expenditure committees have poured at least 2.7 billion dollars into final advertising blitzes, with 1.7 billion dollars directed to conservative causes and 832 million dollars flowing to Democrats. These funds target competitive congressional seats where control of the Senate and House hangs in the balance.

In Texas, Democratic candidate James Talarico raised nearly 150 million dollars to challenge Republican Ken Paxton. Reid Hoffman provided 18 million dollars to support Talarico, while Musk countered with 168 million dollars in backing for Paxton. Other high-profile contests feature Senator Jon Ossoff in Georgia, Sherrod Brown seeking to reclaim an Ohio Senate seat, and Abdul El Sayed running in Michigan on a platform that rejects organizational donations in favor of individual contributions.

Voter Frustration Over Cost of Living Meets Campaign Spending

The influx of money arrives as voters across the country prioritize affordability and inflation above other policy debates. Political analysts note that the heavy reliance on billionaire-funded SuperPACs and negative television advertising risks widening the chasm between everyday citizens and federal institutions.

On September 29, 2026, Donald Trump listened to Elon Musk while the latter responded to a question from journalists outside the White House, highlighting the close alignment between Republican leadership and major technology donors. As polling stations open, the long-term impact of billion-dollar funding streams on legislative accountability remains an open question for American voters.
