US-Iran Tensions Escalate: US Strikes Tankers and Military Facilities
The United States has targeted Iranian military facilities following a series of naval engagements in the Strait of Hormuz, including strikes against two Iranian-flagged oil tankers.
The U.S. Government stated that the tankers were fired upon after they allegedly attempted to violate a blockade. Marco Rubio defended the response to the hostilities, stating, “Of course we fired back. They were shooting at us.”
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that American forces intercepted “unprovoked Iranian attacks” and conducted self-defense strikes while U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyers were transiting the strait. CENTCOM maintained that no U.S. Assets were struck during the encounter.
President Donald Trump confirmed that three U.S. Naval destroyers in the strait were targeted but remained undamaged. In an interview with ABC News, Trump characterized the exchange of fire as a “love tap,” while asserting that “great damage” was inflicted upon the Iranian attackers.
Iranian authorities provided a conflicting account of the events. Iran’s top military command alleged that the U.S. Targeted an Iranian oil tanker moving toward the strait, as well as another vessel entering the strait opposite the Emirati port of Fujairah. Iranian armed forces claimed to have responded immediately by attacking U.S. Military vessels, asserting they caused “significant damage.”
Reports from Iranian news agencies indicated that “several explosions” occurred near the city of Bandar Abbas. Commercial sections of a pier in Qeshm, the largest island in the Gulf, were reportedly targeted.
The flare-up occurs as the ceasefire agreement established on April 7 comes under renewed strain. Iran has accused the United States of violating the terms of that agreement.
Despite the exchange of strikes, U.S. Officials indicated they are awaiting a “serious offer” from Iran today regarding a latest proposal.
