US Coast Guard Cutter Escanaba Returns Home After Major Drug Interdictions
The crew of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Escanaba returned to their home port in Portsmouth, Virginia, on Friday following a 60-day deployment in the Windward Passage. Operating under the U.S. Coast Guard Atlantic Area and the Southeast District, the crew interdicted illicit drug shipments valued at millions of dollars while focusing on maritime border security, search and rescue, and the deterrence of unlawful migration.
Portsmouth Cutter Concludes High-Tempo Windward Passage Patrol
Commissioned in 1987, the vessel handles search and rescue, law enforcement, and national defense operations throughout the Western Hemisphere. During this patrol, the crew operated in the strategically vital Windward Passage to deny resources to transnational criminal organizations.
Operating in high-tempo environments requires continuous logistical support. During the deployment, the Escanaba executed an underway replenishment with the commercial support vessel Homeland Security Cutter–Ocean (HSC-Ocean). This evolution provided the cutter with necessary supplies, allowing it to maintain its station without interruption.
“Whether executing complex law enforcement operations with the support of our TACLET partners or coordinating vital mid-patrol logistics with the HSC-Ocean, the crew displayed the utmost professionalism,” said Capt. Nicholas Seniuk, commanding officer of the Escanaba. “Their dedication directly prevented hazardous voyages and saved lives in the Windward Passage.”
At-Sea Drug Interdictions and Multi-Agency Seizures
Law enforcement operations during the 60-day patrol yielded substantial disruptions to regional drug smuggling networks. A law enforcement detachment from Tactical Law Enforcement Team (TACLET) Pacific joined the Escanaba on August 29 to intercept a boat transporting roughly 2,082 pounds of marijuana. The seized narcotics carried an estimated value of more than $2.4 million.
“I am so proud and fortunate to be a part of the crew of CGC Escanaba; the support and leadership of our command along with the tireless effort of the crew, made this interdiction happen,” noted Petty Officer 1st Class Douglas Strong, who served as the pursuit boat coxswain and functioned as the deck watch officer when the smuggling craft was spotted. “The excellent watch-standing and quick, crucial decisions enabled success.”
In addition to the marijuana seizure, the cutter’s crew coordinated with the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Richard Dixon (WPC 1113). The two crews executed an at-sea transfer of approximately 3,288 kilograms of cocaine. The Escanaba subsequently offloaded both illicit drug shipments in Port Everglades, Florida, directly advancing federal objectives to combat transnational criminal networks and enhance regional stability.
