The USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier is being redirected from the Caribbean Sea to the Middle East, U.S. Officials confirmed Thursday, as President Donald Trump weighs potential military responses to escalating tensions with Iran.
The move adds a second U.S. Aircraft carrier to the region, joining the USS Abraham Lincoln and its strike group, which arrived in the Middle East more than two weeks ago. The deployment of the Ford, the Navy’s newest and most advanced carrier, comes as indirect talks between U.S. And Iranian officials concluded in Oman last week, with both sides characterizing the discussions as productive but offering no immediate breakthroughs.
The USS Ford had been operating in the Caribbean since November, initially as part of a military buildup related to Venezuela. Last month, U.S. Forces captured former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, an operation the Ford strike group supported. The carrier was previously stationed in the Mediterranean Sea before being moved to the Caribbean last fall, according to reports.
President Trump has repeatedly warned Iran against pursuing a nuclear weapon and has threatened military action if a deal cannot be reached. In recent weeks, he has described a “massive armada” being prepared, and stated in an interview with Axios that he was “thinking” about sending another carrier strike group to the region. He similarly pressured Iran over its crackdown on anti-regime protesters last month.
“Either we will make a deal or we will have to do something very tough like last time,” Trump told NBC News, seemingly referencing potential strikes on Iranian nuclear sites. Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has warned that any U.S. Attack would trigger a “regional war.”
The decision to deploy the Ford was first reported by The New York Times. A U.S. Official confirmed the move to Fox News, stating it was made as President Trump considers military options. The deployment places two carrier strike groups and their accompanying warships in close proximity to Iran, significantly increasing the U.S. Military presence in the region.
Trump discussed the situation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday, stating he had urged the Israeli leader to continue negotiations with Iran. He also warned Iran that failure to reach an agreement would be “very traumatic,” according to reports.
The USS Ford’s deployment represents a shift in focus from the Western Hemisphere, where the Trump administration had prioritized military operations related to Venezuela. The move appears to contradict, to some extent, the administration’s stated national security strategy, which emphasized the Western Hemisphere.
