Unrest in Derry Following Removal of Bonfire Material Over Gas Pipeline Safety Concerns
A petrol bomb was thrown at police officers in Derry’s Bogside area following a night of unrest sparked by the removal of bonfire materials.
A ‘Very Major’ Gas Pipeline at Risk
Authorities intervened to clear the site after discovering a “very major” gas pipeline running directly beneath the road where the bonfire was being constructed. The move was deemed necessary to protect critical infrastructure.
Petrol Bombing and Anti-Social Behavior
The clearing of the site triggered a volatile response. A crowd gathered, leading to a series of anti-social behavior incidents that required the deployment of Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) officers to maintain public safety.
During the confrontation, a petrol bomb was thrown in the direction of officers.
Ongoing Restrictions in the Bogside
The road had already been closed to the public to ensure safety during the bonfire’s construction.
The PSNI has maintained a presence in the Bogside to manage the disruption and prevent further escalation. Police continue to urge community members to avoid the area while they manage the site and address the reports of anti-social behavior.
