Unionen Sues Employer After Secret Workplace Recordings

Unionen Sues Employer After Secret Workplace Recordings

October 15, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

The 1,208 Secret Recordings That Sparked a Union Lawsuit

A Stockholm real estate firm accountant discovered she had been recorded 1,208 times over 15 working days without her knowledge, prompting the trade union Unionen to file a formal legal case demanding 100,000 kronor in damages, Aftonbladet reported.

The recordings accumulated between January 16 and February 5, after the company installed a camera system in the workplace where the accountant had worked for a decade. The files captured both video and audio footage, preserving conversations with the employer, tenants, suppliers, and private discussions alike.

The employee first noticed the equipment was disrupting her workspace and initially turned the cameras toward the wall. Months later, she discovered the system had been silently storing thousands of files in the exact spot she needed to sit to perform her daily duties.

Disputed Intentions Behind the Workplace Cameras

The employer acknowledges the physical presence of the camera equipment in the office. However, the company maintains that the surveillance was entirely accidental, claiming the files accumulated due to a technical mistake and denying any intent to monitor the employee.

Unionen rejects the company’s defense. The union points out that the office lacked any signs, notices, or advance information informing workers that recording equipment was active on the premises.

Clementine Malki, a legal counsel at Unionen, emphasized the severity of capturing audio without consent. According to statements given to the publication Kollega, audio recording during workplace surveillance is normally prohibited under regulations enforced by the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection, known as IMY. Malki added regarding the capture of private conversations that Det är mycket allvarligt. Ljudupptagning är dessutom särskilt integritetskänsligt.

Malki noted that the sheer volume of data files rules out a random or isolated incident. She pointed out that Det handlar om 1 208 video- och ljudfiler och är alltså inte fråga om någon enstaka inspelning. The union argues that the treatment constitutes a serious breach of European Union data protection regulations and personal privacy rights, resulting in significant anxiety and discomfort for the worker. Malki stated that Vi ser mycket allvarligt på detta och vår bedömning är att behandlingen har inneburit ett allvarligt intrång i hennes personliga integritet, det har lett till oro och obehag för henne.

Union Advises Workers to Document Hidden Recordings

Legal representation for the union advises individuals who discover hidden workplace recordings to document the evidence immediately and contact their respective union for guidance. Malki advised: Det är viktigt att dokumentera det du har upptäckt och kontakta ditt fackförbund för rådgivning. Affected workers can also report suspected violations directly to IMY if personal data handling breaches statutory frameworks.
