Dean Burrell Steps Down After 32 Years on Berlin Town Council

October 15, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

Berlin Town Councilman Dean Burrell officially stepped down from his position after serving 32 years on the municipal governing body, concluding a career that began when he represented the area that became District 4 in 1994, the Bayside Gazette reported.

Thirty-Two Years of District 4 Representation

Burrell completed his final term during Tuesday night’s municipal meeting, marking the end of a local government career spanning five different mayoral administrations and multiple council cohorts. Originally from Somerset County, Burrell relocated to Berlin in 1985 following his marriage to a local resident.

I do believe it has made me a better person.

Reflecting on his departure, Burrell called his time as an elected official a rewarding experience and praised the collaborative spirit of recent municipal teams, noting that the group found ways to come together for the good of the town even amid disagreement.

Burrell also expressed trust that the council and the mayor will continue advancing local priorities and making decisions to benefit municipal residents, adding that the town staff consist of some of the best people he knows. He thanked Mayor Zack Tyndall, stating that the mayor has grown into a fantastic man with the aptitude to lead the town beyond anyone’s wildest dreams.

Mayor Zack Tyndall acknowledged Burrell’s long tenure during Tuesday’s proceedings, noting that the retiring official consistently provided balanced and dependable guidance. Tyndall stated that Dean has always been a voice of reason on the council, and while they might not always vote the same way, they move forward after the vote, praising that steady leadership as something that has always served them well while noting he thoroughly enjoyed their time together.

Following the departures, newly elected representative Jay Knerr and incoming members Tony Weeg and Matt Stoehr were sworn into office.

Burrell used his final address to challenge the newly constituted council to maintain the collaborative precedent set by previous governing bodies, noting that the current council has walked in the steps of great people before them and calling upon them to do the very same. He urged members to support collective decisions even in the face of ongoing debates, acknowledging that they will not always agree, but asking that when a decision is made, they support that decision.
