UNCG Women’s Soccer Faces tough test Against Colorado

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women’s soccer team prepares for a challenging non-conference matchup against the University of Colorado on Sunday, August 25th.The Spartans are coming off a 2024 season where they finished with an overall record of 6-8-5 and a Southern Conference (SoCon) record of 3-4-2.
Spartan preview
UNCG returns a core group of players for the 2025 season. Senior Taylor Mentzer is the leading returning scorer, having recorded five goals last season. Close behind is freshman Merle Greulich, who scored four goals in 2024 and was named the SoCon Freshman of the Year. Midfielder Kiss also contributed three goals and a team-leading three assists last year.
Defensively,the Spartans will rely on goalkeeper Emma Malone,who posted 61 saves and a 1.14 goals-against average (GAA) in 2024. Caroline ugochukwu appeared in 17 games with 1,584 minutes played, while Isabella Garcia played in 16 games with 1,654 minutes. Meredith McDermott saw action in 13 games for a total of 1,000 minutes, and Ella Ryon played 3,238 minutes throughout her career, scoring two goals for four points in the 2024 campaign.
The Spartans will continue their season facing No. 12 North Carolina on Thursday, August 28th, in Chapel Hill at 4:00 p.m.
Colorado Scouting Report
Colorado enters the contest with a 2-0-1 record to start the 2025 season. The Buffaloes finished the 2024 season with an overall record of 12-5-5 and a 4-2-5 mark in the Big 12 Conference, earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. In the NCAA Tournament, Colorado defeated Georgia 3-2 in the first round before falling to No. 3 Wake Forest 3-1.
Colorado opened the 2025 season with a 1-1 draw against then-ranked No. 12 michigan State. They followed with victories over Air Force (4-1) and fordham (7-1) as part of a six-game homestand. The Buffaloes were voted to finish sixth in the 2025 Big 12 Preseason Poll.
Key Colorado players to watch include hope Leyba, who leads the team with five goals and 10 points this season. Jace Holley is second with nine points,having scored three goals and three assists. goalkeeper Jordan Nytes has started three games, recording 13 saves, a 0.80 GAA, and a 2-0-1 record.
Jordan Nytes, Faith Leyba, Ava Priest, and Hope Leyba were all selected to the 2025 Big 12 Preseason Team. Nytes, Faith Leyba, and Priest were also named to the 2025 Hermann Trophy Watch List.
