Munich, Germany – European champion marathon runner Richard Ringer and his wife, Nada, are mourning the loss of their daughter, April Lucia Vivienne, who was stillborn on October 24th. The tragedy highlights the frequently enough-undiagnosed risks associated with umbilical cord complications during pregnancy.
Ringer, 36, shared the heartbreaking news on Instagram, stating, ”It is with broken hearts that we have to say goodbye to our dearly loved daughter April Lucia Vivienne.” He revealed that April was born silently at 1:53 a.m. at the LMU Clinic in Munich. A silent birth, also known as a stillbirth, is the delivery of a baby who has died in the womb.
“We have no words for the hardest time of our lives – a time that carries us as a couple in deep love and connection,” Ringer wrote in a joint statement with his wife. “At the moment, everything else is at a standstill. We first have to put the fragments of our lives back together.” The two-time Olympic participant added that they are navigating this immense grief together.
Ringer disclosed that the cause of April’s death was a complication with the umbilical cord. “For days, the umbilical cord had wrapped itself around her little leg several times – without being diagnosed medically – so that adequate care was no longer possible,” he explained. Artificial labor was induced in the 35th week of pregnancy, leading to April’s natural birth.
