Campus Clinic Prepares Travelers for Healthy Journeys

As summer travel reaches its peak, Steele’s Apothecary is boosting its services, ensuring that university faculty, staff, and students have access to resources for safe and healthy travel experiences.

Comprehensive Travel Health Services

Located at the College of Pharmacy, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, the travel health clinic offers complete travel health support. These services include customized consultations, necessary vaccines, and appropriate medications.

Pharmacists at Steele’s Apothecary possess specialized training in travel medicine. They are equipped to recommend and administer required vaccinations, making the clinic a convenient resource for addressing travel-related health needs.

Expert Advice and Risk Mitigation

“Sometimes travelers have a false sense of security believing either through research, word of mouth or previous visits that there are little to no risks to worry about, when it could be the opposite,” states Britt Kural, experiential education facilitator at the college.

In fact, a recent study by the CDC found that approximately 40% of U.S. travelers experience health problems during international trips (CDC, 2024).

Kural added, “It’s about keeping potential health risks in mind and making sure travelers are able to mitigate them as best as possible.”

Accessible and Convenient Care

Steele’s Apothecary was established to improve access to specialized travel health consultations for the Rady community. The on-campus location eliminates the need for off-site travel and ensures minimal wait times for appointments.

Travelers can typically schedule initial consultations within five business days. This quick turnaround allows sufficient time to receive guidance and begin any required series of vaccinations before their planned departure.

Plan Ahead for a Safe Trip

Travelers should schedule appointments a minimum of six weeks prior to departure. This timeframe allows for the completion of any necessary vaccine schedules. The clinic offers advice on various topics, including malaria prevention, altitude sickness, traveler’s diarrhea, and region-specific health risks.

Additional Health Support

In addition to confidential consultations and travel-related services, Steele’s Apothecary also organizes flu clinics each fall, further supporting the health and well-being of the campus community.
