Ukraine Warns UN of AI-Driven Drone War, ‘Destructive Arms Race’
UNITED NATIONS – Ukrainian President Volodymyr zelenskyy addressed the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, warning of a looming “destructive arms race” fueled by artificial intelligence in drone warfare.zelenskyy highlighted recent Russian drone incursions into NATO member states as evidence of escalating threats and Russia’s intent too expand the conflict beyond Ukraine’s borders.
The address comes amid heightened anxieties in Europe following reported Russian drone activity in the airspace of several eastern NATO countries, including Poland and Romania, raising concerns about potential regional escalation of Russia’s 3 1/2-year invasion of Ukraine. Zelenskyy stated, “Ukraine is only the first and now Russian drones are already flying across Europe, and Russian operations are already spreading across countries, and Putin wants to continue this war by expanding it.” He emphasized the rapidly evolving nature of the conflict, driven by advancements in AI-powered drone technology.
Zelenskyy’s speech followed a shift in position from former President Donald trump regarding the war. Trump posted on his Truth Social platform that, “After getting to know and fully understand the Ukraine/Russia Military and Economic situation and, after seeing the Economic trouble it is causing Russia, I think Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is in a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form.” This contrasts with previous statements from the Trump management suggesting Ukraine might need to cede territory to Russia to achieve peace, such as Crimea, annexed by Russia in 2014.
During a meeting on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly, Trump stated he believes NATO members should shoot down Russian aircraft violating their airspace when asked by a reporter. “Yes, I do,” Trump responded.
The situation remains fluid and is subject to further developments.
