Ukraine Develops Nika Missile and Spys Interceptor to Counter Jet Drones
Ukraine develops Nika small missile to intercept jet-powered drones
Ukraine has developed a new small missile named “Nika” designed to shoot down jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicles, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced during a meeting with journalists, suspilne.media reported. The initiative comes as Zelensky mentioned that dozens of specialized defense turrets are already deployed across the capital and the surrounding region to counter the incoming threats.
Testing the Nika missile and the Spys interceptor
President Zelensky stated that both Ukrainian and German teams have reacted positively to the new Nika missile and that trials are forthcoming. Alongside this development, officials noted a successful test of another joint German-Ukrainian interceptor system known as “Spys”.
Важливо, що сьогодні ми чули про тест нашого нового перехоплювача, німецько-український перехоплювач Спис. Був позитивний тест. Дякуємо компаніям та систем,
Zelensky said, according to suspilne.media, thanking the participating defense companies for the system’s performance.
Deployment of defense turrets in Kyiv and the region
Ground-based air defenses are expanding concurrently with aerial missile and drone developments. Zelensky mentioned that more than 12 specialized turrets are already operational inside Kyiv, while another eight systems are scheduled for installation across the wider Kyiv region. Additional units will be distributed across various vital installations to strengthen defensive coverage.
Comparing interception rates for standard and jet-powered drones
Zelensky reported that while Ukrainian forces successfully intercept or suppress between 85-92% of standard propeller-driven drones, the effectiveness rate against faster jet-powered unmanned systems drops to roughly 50-60%. September alone saw Russia launch over 2,730 drone units, pushing domestic manufacturers to accelerate the production of new countermeasures. Ukraine currently has 67 different enterprises working on specialized jet-drone interception technologies.
Questions remain regarding when mass manufacturing of the Nika missile and alternative interceptor drones will reach full operational scale across frontline and rear defense units.
