Ukraine is ramping up production of its domestically developed “Equalizer” aerial glide bomb to extend strike range and decrease reliance on donated Western munitions like U.S.-supplied JDAM-ERs and French AASM-250 Hammers, according to the Ukrainian military and defense technology incubator Brave1. The weapon, also known as the “Vyrivniuvach,” features pop-out wings and guidance kits to convert unguided bombs into precision standoff munitions.
As the protracted conflict against Russia grinds forward and the long-term reliability of international military aid remains uncertain, Kyiv is prioritizing independent defense manufacturing. The Equalizer broke cover in May, and defense incubator Brave1 provided updated specifications on Tuesday, confirming the system has cleared trials and stands ready for active combat deployment.
Engineering Challenges of a Motorless Standoff Weapon
Developed by the Ukrainian firm DG Industry with backing from Brave1, the Equalizer fills a critical tactical niche. Ukrainian fighter and attack aircraft face severe anti-air threats near the front lines, forcing pilots to release glide bombs from low altitudes using pop-up launch profiles.
Unlike some foreign alternatives that incorporate rocket boosters or turbojet engines, the Equalizer relies purely on physics for its trajectory. A Brave1 spokesman confirmed to military reporting outlet TWZ that the munition features no motor. Navigation and control depend entirely on inertia and aerodynamics.
Engineers had to solve complex structural balancing equations to manage high speed, severe g-forces, and seamless aircraft integration without onboard propulsion. While the exact range depends on launch altitude and speed, the weapon is designed to strike targets at distances spanning dozens of kilometers, comparable to the 45-mile range of the U.S. Joint Direct Attack Munition-Extended Range (JDAM-ER).
Comparative Analysis: Domestic vs. Donated Standoff Munitions
The Ukrainian Air Force has relied heavily on foreign-donated precision-guided munitions since early in the full-scale invasion. Small Diameter Bomb in November 2023, and French-supplied AASM-250 Hammer precision-guided bombs equipped with rocket boosters.

In response, Ukrainian military developers are investigating propulsion upgrades for future iterations of domestic munitions, setting a long-term goal of reaching targets up to 125 miles away.
