Highlanders Suffer Road Defeat at San Diego
SAN DIEGO, CA – The UC Riverside women’s soccer team fell to San Diego, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon despite a strong effort and multiple scoring opportunities. The loss moves the Highlanders to a [record not specified in text] on the season.
The match saw a clear tactical battle, with San Diego dominating the first half and UCR finding its rhythm in the latter stages.Despite the final score, the Highlanders demonstrated resilience and attacking intent, consistently pushing forward and creating chances, particularly through the efforts of Lauren Nguyen.
San Diego took the lead in the 19th minute,converting a penalty kick. though, Highlander goalkeeper Trinity Hale quickly responded, denying a potential 2-0 deficit just three minutes later with a crucial save. UC Riverside saw its first attacking opportunities in the 13th minute, with Mia DiLeo nearly connecting on a cross in the 15th.
The Highlanders continued to press, earning a set piece in the 28th minute, but Finley Aghassi’s attempt sailed over the goal. A period of sustained possession in the 31st minute led to a cross from Lauren Nguyen, while she continued to threaten the Toreros’ defense, winning a free kick in the 41st minute that Selena Hernandez sent directly to the keeper.
