Ubisoft’s recent performance with its Might & Magic franchise highlights a pattern of uneven execution, despite efforts to revitalize its portfolio with titles like the recently released 30th anniversary edition of Rayman. While a demo for Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era attracted over 24,000 concurrent players, the newly launched free-to-play Might & Magic Fates – Heroes TCG failed to reach even 1,000 peak concurrent players, according to publicly available data.
The disparity in player engagement underscores criticism that Might & Magic Fates – Heroes TCG deviates significantly from fan expectations. Reports suggest the game is perceived as a poorly developed pay-to-win title, more suited for mobile platforms than the core Might & Magic audience. This follows a broader trend of Ubisoft attempting to leverage established intellectual property with varying degrees of success.
The Might & Magic series, once a cornerstone of Ubisoft’s PC gaming presence, has seen its influence wane in recent years. Ubisoft acquired the IP two decades ago when it was a highly successful franchise. The underwhelming launch of Fates – Heroes TCG suggests limited revenue potential, potentially confining the game to a niche audience.
This situation arrives as Ubisoft is actively working on the “future of Rayman,” with teams at Ubisoft Montpellier and Ubisoft Milan collaborating on new projects, according to a recent announcement from the official Rayman X/Twitter account. Insider Gaming reported in October 2024 that development is underway on a Rayman remake, codenamed ‘Steambot,’ tentatively scheduled for a late 2026 release. Preliminary plans for a Rayman 4 also exist, contingent on the success of the remake.
Ubisoft’s broader strategy appears to be shifting towards a more focused release schedule, prioritizing quality over quantity. This shift has reportedly resulted in a delay of several titles, potentially leading to a stronger pipeline of releases in the coming years. The company’s Lunar Sale, currently offering discounts of up to 75% on titles including Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Far Cry 5, is ongoing, with an additional 20% discount available using the code PROMO20.
The company has not yet commented on the performance of Might & Magic Fates – Heroes TCG or any potential plans to address player concerns.
