Legendary UBC Golf Coach Chris MacDonald Announces Retirement After 25 Years of dominance
VANCOUVER, BC – After a remarkable 25-year tenure, Chris MacDonald has stepped down as head coach of the University of British Columbia (UBC) Golf program, citing a desire to dedicate more time to his family.macdonald’s departure marks the end of an era for the Thunderbirds, characterized by unparalleled success and a lasting legacy of championship golf.
MacDonald began his leadership in 2001, initially guiding the women’s team before expanding his role to include the men’s team in 2004. Under his direction, UBC Golf ascended to national prominence, securing a staggering nine NAIA National Championships – seven on the women’s side and two for the men.
The Thunderbirds’ dominance extended to Canadian university competition, amassing a combined 27 Golf Canada Canadian University/Collage Championships (18 women’s, 9 men’s). MacDonald’s teams consistently excelled, even proving their mettle against NCAA Division I competition, claiming victories in prestigious tournaments.
Beyond team accolades,MacDonald fostered a culture of individual excellence,mentoring over 80 All-Canadians throughout his career. His coaching prowess has been repeatedly recognized, earning him a record nine NAIA Coach of the Year awards, along with honors from the Golf Coaches Association of America and the coveted Dave Williams Award – recognizing the top NAIA coach – in both 2008 and 2023. He has also received accolades from the Professional Golfers’ Association of Canada and BC - Lower Mainland, and Sport BC’s Male Coach of the Year.
MacDonald’s impact extended beyond the course. He was a key figure in fundraising efforts for the UBC Golf program and the Thunderbird Golf Society, considerably bolstering the program’s endowment and ensuring its continued success for years to come. His collaborative efforts with student-athletes were instrumental in the annual Thunderbird Golf Society event, a vital source of funding for scholarships, coaching, and competitive opportunities.
