The UAE’s Commitment to shura and Citizen Participation
The Federal National Council (FNC) is celebrating the International Day of Democracy, reaffirming the UAE’s long-held commitment to shura (consultation) and active citizen participation in national development. This dedication stems from deeply rooted values and has been a cornerstone of the UAE since its founding.
The FNC, established on February 12, 1972, embodies the vision of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his fellow rulers. Sheikh Zayed himself emphasized the crucial role of citizens in building the nation, stating that progress is a shared responsibility requiring “opinion, thought, advice, work, creative effort, and sincere cooperation.”
For eighteen legislative chapters, the FNC has strengthened parliamentary life, empowered citizens, and served as a model for supporting leadership and national progress.
Today, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al Nahyan, President of the State, continues this legacy by reinforcing the shura approach, expanding citizen involvement in decision-making, and enabling the FNC to fully exercise its constitutional powers. He underscores the Council’s importance in addressing the concerns of the people and contributing to the UAE’s continued development and prosperity. The FNC’s journey, its processes, and its forward-looking vision demonstrate the UAE’s unwavering dedication to a participatory and thriving future.
