Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, welcomed a decision by the Lebanese government to ban the security and military activities of Hezbollah, according to a statement released Tuesday.
The announcement followed a phone call between Sheikh Abdullah and Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, during which the UAE’s top diplomat described the move as a “pivotal moment” in bolstering security and stability within Lebanon. Sheikh Abdullah affirmed that restricting arms to the state was a crucial step towards reinforcing Lebanon’s sovereignty and authority across its territory, as reported by the UAE’s official news agency, WAM.
The Lebanese government’s decision mandates that Hezbollah disarm and submit its weapons to the Lebanese state, effectively designating the organization as operating outside the bounds of legitimacy. Sheikh Abdullah emphasized the importance of this decision in strengthening Lebanon’s national institutions, referencing the Taif Agreement and relevant international resolutions. He further stated that the move would enhance Lebanon’s ability to play an active role in the Arab, regional, and international arenas.
Sheikh Abdullah also highlighted the potential for the decision to restore security and safety for Lebanese civilians, reduce tensions, and open channels for diplomatic dialogue, ultimately contributing to the restoration of peace, security, and prosperity for the Lebanese people, according to a statement published by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The decision comes amid ongoing regional instability and concerns over Hezbollah’s growing influence in Lebanon and its involvement in conflicts in Syria and elsewhere. The UAE has consistently advocated for a stable and secure Lebanon, free from external interference.
