Waste Transformed: Fijian Entrepreneur Empowers Women Through Upcycling
Turning Discarded Materials into Art and Income
A Fijian entrepreneur is breathing new life into forgotten items, creating beautiful art while simultaneously opening doors for women to generate income.
From House Painter to Artisan Innovator
After a decade and a half spent painting homes, Tikosaya Ledua noticed the sheer volume of usable materials being discarded. This observation sparked an idea that has since blossomed into a thriving business.
Ledua now directs Ledua’s Art Collection, a venture dedicated to transforming discarded objects into decorative pieces and unique works of art.
Fostering Entrepreneurship and Skill Development
Ledua emphasizes that true entrepreneurs are fundamentally problem solvers and innovators. She shares her conviction that perseverance is key, encouraging others to remain steadfast even when facing challenges and to maintain faith in their endeavors.
To further her mission, Ledua is actively conducting workshops in Nadi and Labasa. These sessions are designed to equip grassroots women with upcycling skills, thereby cultivating new avenues for financial independence.
Her overarching goal is to expand the market for recycled goods and to empower women to earn a livelihood from materials that would otherwise be considered waste. This aligns with a growing global movement; for instance, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation reports that the circular economy could generate $4.5 trillion by 2030, highlighting the economic potential of waste reduction and reuse (Ellen MacArthur Foundation).
Through her initiative, Ledua is not only creating art but also building a community of empowered women, demonstrating the significant positive impact of creative reuse.
