Tunisia Flotilla for Gaza Postponed Due to Technical Issues

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Tunis, Tunisia – Over a thousand supporters gathered in Sidi Bou Saïd, near tunis, to greet participants ‍returning ⁣from a Gaza-bound flotilla, demonstrating solidarity amidst escalating concerns over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The welcoming committee included prominent activists Rima Hassan and Greta Thunberg, who voiced strong criticism of international ⁣inaction.

The ‍arrival follows the interception of‌ the⁣ sailboat Mased by Israeli forces on June⁤ 9, approximately 185⁤ kilometers off the‍ coast of Gaza,‌ carrying 12 activists. Organizers report that 130 individuals from various nations had registered ⁣to join the flotilla departing from Tunisia, part of a larger effort originating in ‌Barcelona, to deliver aid to⁤ the besieged territory. This ‌demonstration⁢ of support ⁢occurs as ⁢the ⁢United Nations has declared a state of famine in ⁣Gaza, estimating that 500,000 people are facing “catastrophic” conditions.

During a press conference held on⁣ the beach, Rima Hassan emphasized the significance of grassroots movements, stating, “The role that peoples play today in the face of the cowardice of states…which prevent all solidarity‌ with the Palestinian people.” Greta Thunberg further condemned the situation, asserting,‍ “We all no why we are here. on the ⁢other side of the⁣ sea, there‌ is ⁢an ongoing ⁣genocide, a mass famine⁣ caused ⁢by the killing machine of Israel.”

Hassan also recounted⁤ the interception of ‌the Mased, vowing, “When we were⁢ on the Mased we were intercepted by several‍ dozen soldiers, and we⁢ made‍ the promise as soon as we arrived to immediately return⁢ a maximum of boats.” The flotilla’s attempt to reach Gaza highlights the growing international pressure to address the ⁤dire humanitarian situation and deliver essential aid to the region.
