TSMC Expands Arizona Internship Program as Phoenix Fab Construction Accelerates
PHOENIX, AZ – Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) substantially increased its internship program this summer, hosting 200 students at its Phoenix, Arizona facilities, as construction progresses on its advanced semiconductor fabrication plants. The expansion reflects TSMC’s commitment to building a robust, locally-trained workforce to support its growing operations in the U.S., fueled by the CHIPS and Science Act.
The influx of interns is a key component of a broader strategy to address the specialized talent needs of advanced chip manufacturing. TSMC is heavily investing in partnerships with Arizona State University (ASU) and the state government to cultivate a pipeline of skilled technicians and engineers. These efforts are critical to establishing a long-term domestic supply chain for semiconductors, reducing reliance on overseas production, and bolstering U.S. economic and national security.
ASU has developed new undergraduate and workforce training programs, alongside graduate funding opportunities, to support TSMC’s needs. In January, Arizona launched a registered apprenticeship program with TSMC, offering a 15-week intensive course to certify fab technicians. The success of these initiatives, and the retention of interns following their summer experiences, will be crucial in determining Arizona’s ability to meet the demands of leading-edge silicon production.
The CHIPS Act provides significant incentives for companies like TSMC to invest in domestic manufacturing, and workforce growth is a central pillar of that investment. The company’s Arizona fabs are projected to create thousands of high-paying jobs and contribute substantially to the regional economy.
