Trump's New Press Secretary Katie Zacharia Faces Criticism After 'Brutal' Debut

Trump’s New Press Secretary Katie Zacharia Faces Criticism After ‘Brutal’ Debut

October 15, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

Katie Zacharia, the newly appointed White House press secretary, conducted her first briefing on October 13, amid scrutiny over her professional background and a performance that lasted only 14 minutes. 1News reported. A briefing defined by a reliance on prepared notes, the debut saw Zacharia take questions from only three outlets described as sympathetic to the Republican administration. The briefing was cut short due to the president’s scheduled travel.

Questions Regarding Professional Credentials

The briefing occurred as questions swirl regarding Zacharia’s claims about her legal career. While Zacharia has long described herself as a lawyer and states on social media that she is a member of the profession, California’s state bar confirmed to U.S. media that it holds no record of her holding a license. Although she graduated from Pepperdine University’s law school in 2011, obtaining a degree does not automatically qualify an individual to practice law.

When pressed by reporters about where she passed the bar exam, Zacharia responded: “When I moved to China.” However, foreign nationals are ineligible to sit for the Chinese bar exam. Zacharia maintains that she practiced international transaction law with all the appropriate credentials. Her professional profile indicates previous work at a Beijing law firm, and she has served as general counsel for Fix California, an organization founded by Richard Grenell.

Zacharia Stumbles During Brutal Debut Session

During the 14-minute session, Zacharia stumbled through her responses. At one point, when discussing her family’s move to Washington, D.C., she accidentally confused her husband with the president, stating, my president … uh excuse me, my husband is out here. She then joked, That’s a good one. Her performance was labeled brutal by a White House staffer and was compared to a comedy sketch by former press secretary Jen Psaki. Another unnamed official suggested she must improve quickly to avoid a short tenure in the role. Anthony Scaramucci, who served as communications director for 11 days in 2017, remarked on X, I hope she makes it.

Despite the criticism, President Trump offered a different assessment while speaking to reporters shortly after the event. In a prior Truth Social post, Trump stated, She has an unblemished record of support, and has been a loyal and brilliant supporter, right from the beginning.

The Path to the Podium

The appointment of the 41-year-old followed her brief tenure at Trump’s social media company. As the administration’s new voice, Zacharia had previously stated her goal for the position: I get to do what I was doing on the outside already, which was hoping to amplify, multiply and expand upon President Trump’s incredible agenda for the American people. She currently balances her duties as a mother of four, with plans for her family to relocate from California to D.C.
