Trump Hints at Potential India Visit for QUAD Meet, Signals Progress on Trade Dispute
New Delhi – Former U.S. President Donald trump may visit india for a potential quadrilateral security dialog (QUAD) meeting, according to indications from his envoy pick, signaling a possible thaw in relations strained by trade disputes adn differing stances on the Russia-Ukraine war. The prospect of a visit, coupled with comments suggesting a trade deal isn’t far off, represents a shift after Trump previously imposed important tariffs on Indian goods.
The move comes as the U.S. seeks to strengthen alliances in the Indo-Pacific region and navigate complex geopolitical challenges. India’s continued purchase of discounted Russian oil has drawn criticism from Washington, with Trump accusing New Delhi of “fueling Russia’s deadly attacks on Ukraine.” However, the potential for a visit and renewed trade talks suggests a willingness to compartmentalize these disagreements and pursue areas of mutual interest. Currently,Indian goods face a 25 per cent reciprocal duty, plus an additional 25 per cent levy linked to India’s Russian oil purchases, resulting in a combined 50 per cent tariff - among the highest globally.
Trump’s envoy pick, whose name was not promptly released in reports, indicated that discussions are underway to address the trade imbalance and reduce tariffs. While details remain scarce, the suggestion that a deal is ”not that far apart” offers a glimmer of hope for resolving the long-standing trade friction between the two nations. The QUAD, comprising the U.S., India, Japan, and Australia, is a key forum for regional security cooperation, and a Trump visit would underscore the importance the former president places on the alliance.
