Trump Warns Iran: ‘Won’t Be Anything Left’ After National Security Meeting

May 18, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

President Donald Trump issued a stark warning to Iran on Monday following a closed-door meeting of his national security team, declaring that the United States would leave “nothing left” in response to heightened tensions in the Middle East. The remarks, delivered during a briefing at the White House, came as intelligence assessments indicated a surge in Iranian-backed militia activity along the Iraq-Syria border and increased provocations against U.S. Forces in the region.

The warning followed a series of escalating incidents, including a drone strike attributed to Iranian proxies near U.S.-led coalition positions in Syria last week. While the administration has not yet confirmed direct Iranian involvement in the attack, officials cited intercepted communications suggesting Tehran’s approval of the operation. Trump’s language—echoing his 2018 rhetoric during the height of the “maximum pressure” campaign—signaled a potential shift toward more aggressive posturing, though White House aides stressed that no immediate military action had been authorized.

During the meeting, attended by Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and Joint Chiefs Chairman General C.Q. Brown Jr., officials reviewed intelligence indicating that Iran had expanded its arsenal of precision-guided missiles in recent months, including models capable of striking deeper into Saudi Arabia and U.S. Bases in the Persian Gulf. A senior administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the U.S. Had accelerated deliveries of advanced air defense systems to regional allies, including Israel and the United Arab Emirates, in response to the assessments.

Trump’s warning also came as diplomatic channels remained frozen following Iran’s rejection of a U.S.-brokered proposal for indirect talks on nuclear restrictions. The Iranian Foreign Ministry dismissed the proposal last week, calling it “non-starter” and accusing Washington of seeking to impose new sanctions under the guise of negotiations. The White House has not ruled out unilateral measures, including renewed sanctions on Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, though officials have privately acknowledged that such steps could further isolate the U.S. In the region.

In a separate development, the Pentagon confirmed that U.S. Central Command had increased rotational deployments of F-22 Raptor squadrons to Qatar and the UAE, citing “preventive posture adjustments” rather than a direct response to the Iranian threat. The move, first reported by defense analysts, aligns with Trump’s repeated emphasis on deterrence through “overwhelming” military readiness—a strategy he has framed as a counter to what he describes as Iran’s “brinkmanship.”

The national security team’s discussions also included an assessment of Russia’s role in facilitating Iranian arms transfers, with officials citing recent satellite imagery showing increased shipments of ballistic missile components via Syrian ports. The White House has not yet determined whether to escalate public criticism of Moscow, though internal cables reviewed by the team suggest that Russian officials have privately expressed concerns about Iran’s destabilizing influence in the region.

As of Monday evening, the State Department had not issued a formal response to Trump’s remarks, though a spokesperson directed inquiries to the National Security Council. The White House declined to comment on whether the president’s warning had been coordinated with allies, including Israel and Saudi Arabia, both of which have independently ramped up military drills in recent weeks. The last such high-level U.S. Warning on Iran came in February, when Trump ordered a limited cyberattack on Iranian nuclear facilities in retaliation for a series of rocket strikes on U.S. Personnel in Iraq.

The administration’s internal deliberations continue, with a classified briefing scheduled for Tuesday to assess potential Iranian responses, including possible retaliation against U.S. Interests in Iraq or Lebanon. No further meetings of the full national security team are currently planned, though the White House has indicated that Trump will monitor developments closely in the coming days.
