Trump & Von der Leyen Agree: 15% Tariffs on EU Exports to US

Von der Leyen Confirms 15% Tariff on Key Sectors Including Autos and Pharmaceuticals

In a landmark proclamation from Scotland,European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen declared a significant breakthrough in trade relations with the United States. “We did it. We did it,” she stated, alongside US President Donald Trump, revealing a mutually agreed-upon tariff rate. “We have stabilized on a single tariff rate of 15% for the vast majority of EU exports,” von der Leyen explained. This new cap will encompass critical industries such as automobiles, semiconductors, and pharmaceuticals. She emphasized that this 15% represents a maximum limit, ensuring clarity and stability for businesses and citizens across the Atlantic.

Strategic Products to See Zero Tariffs Under New Agreement

The agreement also includes a “zero for zero” provision on a range of strategic products, a move designed to foster growth in key technological and industrial areas. President von der Leyen highlighted that this includes aircraft and their components, certain chemicals, generic medications, semiconductor manufacturing equipment, select agricultural goods, natural resources, and essential raw materials. The Commission plans to continue discussions to expand this list of tariff-free items.

“Best Possible Outcome” Achieved After difficult Negotiations

Reflecting on the arduous negotiation process, President von der leyen described the 15% tariff agreement as “the best we could reach.” She acknowledged the significant differences in initial positions, stating,”The negotiation was very difficult, because we started from positions very far apart. It was hard – but it was hard-won.” This sentiment underscores the commitment from both sides to find common ground and forge a new path for transatlantic trade.
