WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump intends to extend an invitation to King Charles III and Queen Camilla for a state visit to the United States next year,a senior White House official confirmed. The planned visit woudl coincide with the US’s 250th anniversary celebrations, though it will be held as a separate event.
This follows Trump’s recent state visit to the UK, where he met with King Charles and Prime Minister Keir Starmer, calling the trip an “exquisite honour” and a exhibition of the “unbreakable bond” between the two nations. Trump also described King Charles as “my friend.”
The last official state visit by a British monarch to the US occurred in 2007, when Queen Elizabeth II visited under President George W. bush. Queen Elizabeth made five state visits to the US throughout her reign, beginning in 1957 with President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
While no specific date or details of the planned visit have been released, the White House official indicated further information would be forthcoming. The Telegraph first reported the potential invitation, with the Independent noting a source suggesting Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, could alternatively be invited.
King Charles himself recently spoke of the “special relationship” between the US and the UK, stating, “I have always admired the ingenuity of the American people and the principles of freedom, which your great democracy has represented since its inception.” He added that he has “cherished a close tie between the British and American people” throughout his life, recalling over 20 visits to the United States since 1970.
