Trump says Marco Rubio will go to Cuba after focus on Iran concludes
On Friday, October 23, at a political rally in Fort Myers, Florida, President Donald Trump stated that the United States would address Cuba following its dealings with Iran, according to Reuters reporting by Bo Erickson, Kanishka Singh, and Bhargav Acharya.
Trump Pledges Florida Rally Action on Cuba Following Iran
Trump told the crowd in Florida that the administration plans to send Secretary of State Marco Rubio to finalize an agreement regarding Havana once the focus on Iran concludes. “We’ll take care of Cuba on our way back from Iran … then we’re going to send Marco Rubio in to finish up the deal,” Trump said at the rally.
The remarks build upon predictions Trump made the previous month that Washington and Havana would eventually reach an agreement without requiring military action. Despite those predictions, the Trump administration’s stated objective remains a change in Cuba’s communist government. Washington has maintained an embargo against Cuba for over six decades, and pressure on the island nation has intensified following a deadly U.S. military raid in January that seized then-Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
Economic Strain and Energy Crises Under the U.S. Embargo
A U.S.-imposed oil blockade implemented earlier this year has left Cuba under severe economic strain. The island contends with acute fuel shortages and widespread blackouts that have been heavily exacerbated by failing domestic infrastructure.

Diplomatic Stance and Future Negotiations in Havana
Despite mounting economic pressures, diplomatic channels remain formally open. Cuba’s foreign minister told the United Nations General Assembly the previous month that the island nation would always remain open for dialogue with Washington.
No specific timeline has been announced for when Secretary Rubio will begin formal talks following the administration’s current focus on Iran.
