Trump Warns Russian Airspace Incursion ‘Could Be Big Trouble’
TALLINN, Estonia – Former US President Donald Trump expressed concern Friday over a recent incursion into Estonian airspace by three Russian fighter jets, stating the situation “could be big trouble.” the jets remained in Estonian airspace without permission for 12 minutes, according to the Estonian government.
The incident marks the third reported breach of NATO airspace in the last two weeks, following similar events involving drones in Poland and Romania, prompting condemnation from the military alliance. Estonia’s foreign minister, Margus Tsakhna, described the latest incursion as “unprecedentedly brazen,” noting it was the fourth violation of Estonian airspace by Russia this year, but the first involving three fighter aircraft. The incident occurred over the Gulf of Finland and involved three Russian MIG-31 fighters.
Trump, speaking to reporters, said, “I don’t love it. I don’t like when that happens.” The Estonian foreign ministry has summoned the Russian charge d’affaires and delivered a formal protest note.
NATO’s North Atlantic Council is scheduled to convene in Estonia early next week to discuss the Russian incursion and potential responses. The repeated breaches raise concerns about escalating tensions in the region and the potential for miscalculation, notably as the war in Ukraine continues.
