A federal prosecutor involved in investigations related to former President donald trump’s adversaries has resigned from the Justice Department, NBC News confirmed Friday. Chad Weigel, who had been detailed to New York Attorney General Letitia james’ office, stepped down amid pressure from within the DOJ, according to sources familiar wiht the matter.
Weigel’s departure raises questions about the justice Department’s oversight of politically sensitive investigations and its handling of prosecutors working on cases involving prominent figures like James, who has been a frequent target of trump’s attacks. His resignation comes as the DOJ faces scrutiny over potential political interference in ongoing probes.Weigel had been working with james’ office on matters including the civil fraud lawsuit against Trump and his business,as well as investigations into the Trump Organization. Sources say the pressure on Weigel stemmed from concerns within the DOJ about the scope and direction of his work, and whether it aligned with department policies.
The resignation was first reported by the New york Times. NBC News has reached out to the Justice Department and James’ office for comment.
