Trump Pauses Project Freedom Amid Saudi Arabia and Ally Pressure

May 7, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

President Donald Trump has paused “Project Freedom,” a military initiative designed to secure the passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, after Saudi Arabia denied the United States access to its airspace and military installations.

The decision to suspend the operation follows a move by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to block U.S. Military aircraft from flying through Saudi airspace and operating out of the Prince Sultan Airbase, located southeast of Riyadh. According to U.S. Officials, the restriction of these critical assets forced the administration to halt the initiative to restore essential military access.

The tension began after President Trump announced the launch of Project Freedom via social media on a Sunday afternoon. The announcement reportedly caught Gulf allies by surprise, particularly leadership in Saudi Arabia, who were not briefed on the specific timing or nature of the operation before it was made public.

In an attempt to resolve the diplomatic rift, President Trump held a phone call with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. However, U.S. Officials stated that the conversation did not resolve the issue of airspace and base access. The president also engaged in discussions with leaders in Qatar after the effort had already been set in motion.

Saudi officials remained in contact with several key members of the U.S. Government throughout the development, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Vice President JD Vance, and U.S. Central Command. A Saudi source told NBC News that while the announcement may have seemed abrupt, things were happening quickly in real time.

The friction over Project Freedom coincides with ongoing regional diplomatic efforts. Saudi Arabia has expressed support for a diplomatic process led by Pakistan, which is attempting to broker a deal between the United States and Iran to end the war.

The rapid shift from the announcement of the initiative to its pause has been characterized as a source of confusion within the administration’s efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The incident has highlighted the operational dependencies of U.S. Military power in the Persian Gulf, where access to regional bases and airspace remains contingent on the cooperation of local allies.

The U.S. Military’s status at the Prince Sultan Airbase and the current state of Saudi airspace access remain the primary points of contention as the administration evaluates the next steps for its strategy in the Strait of Hormuz.
