US Treasury Confirms Draft Design of $1 Coin Featuring Donald Trump
The US Treasury has confirmed the authenticity of draft designs for a $1 coin commemorating the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026, which feature images of former President Donald Trump on both sides. The designs, circulating online, have sparked discussion regarding US laws governing coin imagery.
The potential coin is part of a series authorized by the Circulating collectible coin Redesign Act, allowing for special $1 coins to celebrate America’s semiquincentennial. However, US code stipulates that no coin can bear the image of a living former or current President, or of any deceased former President during the two-year period following their death. The law also prohibits head and shoulders portraits or busts of any person, living or dead, on the reverse of the coins.
A Treasury spokesperson told CNN, “While a final $1 coin design has not yet been selected to commemorate the United States’ semiquincentennial, this first draft reflects well the enduring spirit of our country and democracy, even in the face of immense obstacles.” The spokesperson added that they “look forward to sharing more soon.”
White House Press secretary karoline Leavitt, when asked if Trump had seen the draft images, responded, “I’m not sure if he’s seen it, but I’m sure he’ll love it.”
