Trump Imposes Tariffs on 69 Countries, Citing National Security

U.S. President Donald Trump has signed a sweeping package of decrees introducing tariffs ranging from 10% to 41% on imports from 69 countries and territories, including the European Union. The new import duties are set to take effect seven days after the signing, with the exception of Canada, where restrictions begin promptly.

The White House stated that the purpose of these duties is to reduce the trade deficit, which it described as an “unusual and extreme threat to the U.S.national security and economy.”

Syria faces the highest tariffs at 41%, while Laos and Burma will see duties of 40% each. The United Kingdom and its Falkland Islands will experience the lowest tariffs at 10%.

Taiwan, a significant global exporter of semiconductors, will be subject to a 20% tariff. Some U.S. partners, including Great Britain, the EU, and japan, have managed to reach agreements, though critics in these nations question the outcomes.

canada is especially affected, with a 35% duty set to be implemented on Friday, August 1. Despite efforts by Prime Minister Mark Carney to negotiate,an agreement was not reached. U.S.Secretary of Trade howard Lutnik suggested that Carney’s recognition of a palestinian state during negotiations angered President Trump.

Goods qualifying under the North American Trade Agreement (USMCA), meaning they are made entirely from North American raw materials or involve significant processing of imported resources, will remain exempt from the increased tariffs.

Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te called the 20% tariff imposed on his country’s imports “temporary” and expressed hope for a reduction through future negotiations.
