Trump Frustrated Over Iran Strikes: US Politics Live Updates

President Donald Trump is weighing potential military strikes against Iran, a move that comes as a ten-to-fifteen-day deadline he imposed for a nuclear deal approaches, according to multiple sources within the administration. The president, although, has expressed frustration with assessments suggesting any strike would not be a “singular, decisive blow,” and could escalate into a protracted conflict.

The decision rests in part on the judgment of special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who are evaluating whether Tehran is genuinely negotiating or stalling for time regarding its nuclear capabilities. Trump has reportedly pressed his advisors for options that would deliver a substantial strike, aiming to compel Iranian leaders to negotiate from a weakened position. Military planners, however, have cautioned against any guarantee of achieving that outcome, CBS News reported.

The administration anticipates receiving Iran’s latest proposal this week, ahead of a scheduled “last-ditch” round of negotiations in Geneva on Thursday. Trump, speaking at the inaugural meeting of his Board of Peace, warned that “really disappointing things” will happen if a “meaningful” agreement isn’t reached, according to the Independent.

Simultaneously, the United States is positioning military forces throughout the Middle East, capable of launching multiple waves of strikes into Iran, CNN reported. This deployment goes beyond previous, more limited uses of force, such as targeting ISIS leadership or striking Syrian airfields after chemical attacks. Unlike those operations, this potential campaign lacks a clearly defined end state, according to a CNN analysis by former national security officials.

The current tensions are rooted in a convergence of three issues: Iran’s missile arsenal, its domestic crackdown on protests, and its unresolved nuclear program. The October 1, 2024, launch of approximately two hundred Iranian missiles toward Israeli cities, intercepted by US and Israeli defense systems, highlighted the immediacy of the missile threat, according to CNN.

Tehran has vowed to respond “decisively” to any military aggression, warning that it would consider all US military bases and assets in the region as legitimate targets, as communicated in a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Iran maintains it does not seek escalation and would not initiate war.

The situation is further complicated by a recent Supreme Court ruling that challenged Trump’s authority to impose tariffs, prompting him to declare he could utilize them in a “much more powerful and obnoxious way.” The UK and EU have requested clarification on existing trade deals in light of this development.

The US military has also conducted a series of strikes against alleged drug smuggling boats in the Caribbean, killing three men in its third such operation within a week. Southern Command identified the deceased as “male narco-terrorists.”
