Trump endorses Benjamin Netanyahu before October 27 election

Trump endorses Benjamin Netanyahu before October 27 election

Trump Endorsement Sets High Stakes for Israel October 27 Election

With Israel heading into its first national election since the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attack, United States President Donald Trump announced his complete and total endorsement of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday from Washington. The endorsement arrives just nine days before Israeli voters head to the polls on October 27, with public opinion polls indicating that neither Netanyahu nor his main opposition will secure the 61 seats needed in parliament to form a governing coalition.

Trump posted his support on Truth Social, designating Netanyahu a great warrior prime minister and commending his role in the ongoing conflict against Iran. The announcement places the regional war at the very center of the Israeli electoral contest. Trump warned that the United States would be left to confront Iran alone if Netanyahu is not re-elected, invoking the rhetoric of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, who label the US and Israel the big and small Satans. Netanyahu quickly thanked the US leader on X, stating that together they will complete the mission.

Eisenkot Rejects Foreign Intervention in Israeli Leadership

Netanyahu’s main challenger, Gadi Eisenkot, pushed back against the foreign intervention during a campaign event in Tel Aviv. Eisenkot stated that the Israeli public alone decides who leads the country, while expressing appreciation for Trump’s large contribution to national security. Eisenkot added that any incoming US administration will ultimately work with whatever government the Israeli electorate chooses.

Polling projections show Netanyahu’s coalition falling short of the 61-seat threshold required to govern. Israel’s parliamentary system relies entirely on coalition-building rather than a direct popular vote. Netanyahu faces intense domestic scrutiny and criticism over his far-right coalition’s handling of security failures tied to the October 7 attacks, which claimed some 1,200 lives, alongside ongoing military campaigns in Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran.

Netanyahu Resists State Inquiry into Security Breakdown

Public division runs deep across Israeli society regarding the government’s accountability for the 2023 security breakdown. Netanyahu has repeatedly refused to establish a state inquiry with full statutory authority to summon ministers and official documents, preferring a commission with limited powers. Meanwhile, his ongoing corruption trial continues to cast a shadow over his leadership. The prime minister has consistently denied all allegations of wrongdoing in that trial.

The upcoming vote also centers heavily on socioeconomic and domestic policy tensions, including the contested conscription of young ultra-orthodox men into military service, rising living costs, and Israel’s broader international status. As the October 27 election approaches, voters weigh these compounding pressures against the backdrop of international endorsements and ongoing regional conflicts.
