Trump Defends Darline Graham After South Carolina Senator Admits National Security Is Not Her Thing

August 22, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

President Donald Trump defended interim South Carolina Republican Senator Darline Graham on Friday, August 21, 2026, backing her candid admission that national security is not her thing as he prepared for a rally in Myrtle Beach ahead of an upcoming primary runoff.

The defense comes at a crucial political juncture for the Palmetto State. Graham, appointed to the seat following the death of her brother, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, faces an intraparty challenge. The August 25 runoff will test whether presidential backing can propel a political newcomer past a conservative challenger.

The Context Behind the Debate Remarks

During an August 18 candidates’ debate, Darline Graham drew attention when questioned about Taiwan and the South China Sea. She stated plainly that she was not that informed on national security, emphasizing instead her support for the military.

Trump dismissed criticism of those remarks while speaking to reporters in Washington prior to his departure for South Carolina. Trump stated that Graham was simply being honest and noted that she is surrounded by very good people and understands that national security is Trump’s thing. The 62-year-old former commissioner of the South Carolina Commission for the Blind was appointed by Governor Henry McMaster following the passing of Lindsey Graham on July 11 due to arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

The Contenders in the August 25 Runoff

Graham finished first in the August 11 special primary election, capturing 33% of the vote. However, because she did not secure a majority, she was forced into a runoff against U.S. Representative Ralph Norman, a hardline conservative belonging to the House Freedom Caucus who finished with 25% of the vote.

Norman is a conservative who’s aligned with Trump but previously supported former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley in the 2024 presidential primary. Haley has endorsed Norman in the ongoing Senate race. Meanwhile, Graham has secured key endorsements from U.S. Representative Russell Fry, who received 20% of the vote, and national groups such as Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America.

Implications for State Infrastructure and Governance

The outcome of this special election will dictate who represents South Carolina in Washington through the remainder of the term, ultimately deciding who faces Democratic nominee Annie Andrews, a physician, in the November general election.

As the campaign moves into its final hours before voters head to the polls on August 25, the race serves as a test of the power of Trump’s endorsement among Republican voters. The winner will inherit a Senate seat and the legislative responsibilities of shaping federal policy for millions of South Carolinians.
