Former president Donald trump has publicly stated his intention to address issues of homelessness and rising crime rates in Washington, D.C.His proposals include potential federal intervention, possibly involving the deployment of the National Guard and a temporary assumption of control over the city’s governance by federal authorities.
In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump demanded the relocation of individuals experiencing homelessness from the nation’s capital, stating, “The homeless must leave, promptly.”
He indicated that alternative accommodations would be provided, but located outside of the city limits. The specific locations for these accommodations have not been disclosed.
Trump asserted his commitment to improving the safety and aesthetic appeal of Washington, D.C., promising to make it “safer and more beautiful than ever before.”
Washington D.C. has seen a documented increase in its homeless population in recent years, with the 2023 Point-in-Time Count identifying 6,841 people experiencing homelessness, a 10.7% increase from 2022. Concerns over public safety, particularly in areas frequented by tourists and near federal buildings, have also been voiced by local residents and officials. The Metropolitan Police Department reported a 5% increase in violent crime in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same period last year.
