Trump and Putin Discuss Ukraine Peace Deal in Hour-Long Phone Call

September 11, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

The high-level diplomatic exchange follows recent travel by U.S. special envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, who held separate meetings in recent days with both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Diplomatic Assurances Amid Military Objectives

According to Yury Ushakov, Putin’s foreign affairs adviser, the conversation between the two leaders was “constructive and quite frank.”

Ushakov stated that Putin assured Trump during the call that Russia maintains no aggressive plans regarding Europe or NATO member states, even as the Kremlin outlined its ongoing military objectives in Ukraine.

While the White House did not immediately return requests for comment on the specifics of the call, the diplomatic push represents an intensified effort by the Trump administration to broker an end to Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War II.

Resumed Strikes Shatter Brief Weekend Truce

During his weekend meeting with the U.S. delegation, Zelenskyy expressed appreciation for the diplomatic mission, emphasizing Kyiv’s desire to see an end to the hostilities.

At the same time, the diplomatic engagement has not yet yielded a permanent cessation of hostilities. Following a brief weekend truce tied to the negotiations, military strikes quickly resumed across multiple fronts.

Local officials reported that Russian attacks on Tuesday morning in Kyiv resulted in at least five civilian deaths and left 25 others wounded. Concurrently, Russian authorities reported three fatalities and 13 injuries across the Bryansk and Kursk regions, while Ukrainian strikes in Russian-annexed Crimea reportedly claimed another five lives. The concurrent continuation of drone and missile attacks underscores the severe security challenges facing civilian populations as diplomatic channels remain active.

Commercial Adaptation to Geopolitical Volatility

Navigating the complex geopolitical risks and localized security disruptions requires robust institutional planning. Organizations and municipal entities seeking to safeguard operations amidst ongoing international volatility frequently partner with specialized risk assessment consultants to evaluate regional exposures.

Furthermore, commercial enterprises adjusting to shifting supply chain realities and cross-border restrictions regularly consult experienced international trade attorneys to ensure full compliance with evolving regulatory frameworks.

Upcoming Meeting Scheduled as Scrutiny Mounts

Trump, who has made resolving the conflict a priority of his second administration, previously pledged during his campaign to secure a settlement within 24 hours before later characterizing that timeline as an exaggeration.

The administration has faced sustained scrutiny from critics over its approach to negotiating peace without the full, continuous integration of all European and Ukrainian stakeholders.

Nevertheless, Ukrainian officials confirmed that a meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy is anticipated later in the month as diplomatic talks continue to evolve.
