Bilateral Talks Precede White House State Dinner
The diplomatic evening marked Xi’s first State Visit to the White House since 2015, when he met with then-President Barack Obama. It represents the second face-to-face summit between Trump and Xi this year, following Trump’s trip to Beijing in May. According to reporting from Diario Libre and Noticias SIN, the daytime discussions in the Oval Office addressed acute geopolitical frictions between the world’s two largest economies, including trade tariffs and regional security concerns.
Outside the executive mansion, public dissent accompanied the diplomatic proceedings. As reported by Noticias SIN, dozens of demonstrators gathered near the White House perimeter bearing signs and chanting slogans such as “Xi Jinping, you are not welcome” and “Freedom for Tibet.”
Arrival and Diplomatic Attire
President Xi and Peng Liyuan arrived at the executive residence aboard a Chinese presidential limousine, the Hongqi N701. Xi appeared in a dark gray, Mao-style formal jacket, while Peng Liyuan wore a burgundy red dress combining traditional Chinese elements with minimalist lines, mirroring the attire she has selected for previous international state appearances.
Trump Showcases Unfinished White House Ballroom Project
Stepping away from prepared remarks inside the East Room, President Trump paused the State Dinner proceedings to invite his guests to inspect the construction of a new White House ballroom. Trump told attendees that the project is roughly one year away from completion and noted that American presidents have attempted to build such a space for 150 years.

The State Dinner menu blended American and Chinese culinary traditions. Prepared for the guests in the East Room, the meal featured a vegetable first course, sesame-crusted sea bass with roasted eggplant and green salsa, followed by a vanilla creméux and honey ice cream harvested directly from White House beehives.
The guest list featured prominent American technology and business leaders. According to Noticias SIN and Diario Libre, attendees included Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Tesla and SpaceX chief Elon Musk, Apple CEO Tim Cook, and Nvidia and OpenAI executive Sam Altman. Unlike Trump’s delegation-heavy trip to Beijing earlier in the year, Xi traveled to Washington without a business entourage.
Dinner festivities opened with a toast featuring Schramsberg Blanc de Noir, a Californian sparkling wine from the same winery that supplied the vintage used by President Richard Nixon and Premier Zhou Enlai during the historic 1972 presidential visit to China. Although President Trump is a teetotaler, he sipped the wine as a gesture of diplomatic courtesy, mirroring a similar gesture during the banquet hosted by Xi in Beijing last May.
Musical Performances and Gala Entertainment
Entertainment for the evening included performances by military musicians from the United States Marine Corps and the United States Army. The program also highlighted tenor Christopher Macchio, a favored vocalist of President Trump who previously performed during the presidential inauguration in January 2025.
