A truck driver was rescued early Wednesday morning after his big rig partially plunged off a rain-slicked freeway bridge in Oceanside, California, leaving the cab suspended approximately 70 feet above the San Luis Rey River. The incident occurred around 5 a.m. On northbound Interstate 5, just south of Harbor Drive, according to the Oceanside Fire Department.

Emergency responders arrived to find the tractor-trailer’s cab precariously balanced on the edge of the San Luis Rey Bridge. Firefighters immediately began stabilization efforts to prevent further movement of the vehicle, a critical step before attempting a rescue. They ultimately accessed the driver by removing the rear window of the cab, allowing them to safely extract the trucker.

The Oceanside Fire Department confirmed that the driver was not injured during the incident. The rescue operation required careful coordination and specialized equipment due to the height and unstable position of the vehicle.

Authorities have cautioned motorists to exercise extreme care during wet weather conditions. The Oceanside Fire Department issued a statement reminding drivers to avoid unnecessary travel during rainfall and, if travel is unavoidable, to reduce speed and increase following distances. The incident underscores the heightened risks associated with driving in inclement weather, particularly on bridges and elevated roadways.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash, focusing on the role of the rain-slicked road conditions. No further details regarding the driver or the cargo were immediately released.
