Trent & Mbappe Benched: Arbeloa’s Strict Rule at Real Madrid After Derby Win
Real Madrid secured a 3-2 victory over Atletico Madrid in Sunday’s Madrid derby, but the team selection by head coach Álvaro Arbeloa sparked debate among supporters. Despite expectations that Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kylian Mbappe would feature in the starting eleven, both players were named on the bench, with Dani Carvajal and Brahim Diaz taking their places.
The decision to start Carvajal, the Real Madrid captain, was particularly noteworthy given his limited playing time since undergoing knee surgery in October. He was substituted off in the 64th minute, making way for Alexander-Arnold, who subsequently provided the assist for Vinicius Junior’s winning goal.
According to reports from Marca, Alexander-Arnold had been slated to start against Atletico, but was dropped from the lineup as a consequence of arriving late to a training session late last week. The disciplinary action mirrors similar approaches taken by Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick, who has consistently benched players for tardiness.
While player discipline for punctuality is not uncommon in Spanish football, it has been a less frequent occurrence at Real Madrid. Flick’s implementation of the policy at Barcelona has been well-received, but the potential impact within the Real Madrid dressing room, known for its prominent personalities, remains to be seen. But, indications suggest that Arbeloa currently enjoys the full support of his squad, increasing the likelihood of acceptance for this disciplinary approach.
Arbeloa, who began his managerial career with Real Madrid’s youth teams in 2020, was appointed head coach of Real Madrid B in 2025 before taking the helm of the senior team in 2026. He previously enjoyed a distinguished playing career, including stints at Liverpool and two spells with Real Madrid, winning eight major titles with the club, including the 2011-12 La Liga title and two Champions League titles.
The implementation of stricter disciplinary measures suggests a desire for change within the Real Madrid setup. Arbeloa’s willingness to make difficult decisions in his short tenure could ultimately influence whether he is offered the head coach position on a permanent basis at the end of the season.
