Matthew Hurt Joins south East Melbourne Phoenix After Stint wiht Memphis Grizzlies

Matthew Christopher Hurt, born April 20, 2000, in rochester, Minnesota, USA, has signed with the south East Melbourne phoenix of the Australian National Basketball League (NBL) for the 2024/25 season. The forward, standing at 206 cm and weighing 107 kg, is known for his important impact on the court, characterized by strong physicality and an excellent shot.

Career Trajectory

undrafted in the 2021 NBA Draft, Hurt began his professional career by signing with the Houston rockets on August 13, 2021, participating in the NBA Summer League.He was released by the Rockets on September 24, prior to training camp. A brief stint with the memphis Grizzlies followed on October 14, but he was waived two days later. Hurt then joined the Memphis Hustle for the 2021-22 NBA G League season.

In the 2022 NBA Summer League, Hurt played for the Milwaukee Bucks. He had a short pre-installation period with the Memphis grizzlies in October 2022 before returning to the Memphis Hustle for the 2022-23 G League season. during this period, he played 43 games, averaging 14 points and 4 rebounds. After participating in the Grizzlies’ 2023 NBA Summer League campaign, Hurt rejoined the Hustle. On January 29, 2024, he signed a 10-day contract with the Grizzlies, appearing in eight NBA games for them during the 2023-24 season, averaging 4 points and 2 rebounds. With the Hustle,his averages were 20 points and 7 rebounds per game.

The most recent season, 2024/25, saw Hurt make a significant impact with the South East Melbourne Phoenix, where he averaged 20.1 points and 7.4 rebounds across 29 appearances. His performance earned him a spot on the “All-NBL First Team,” marking a year of considerable growth for the American forward.
