The pentagon is pursuing 18 awards focused on boost-phase space-based interceptors (SBIs), weapons designed to destroy a missile promptly after launch. Intercepting a missile during this phase presents critically important challenges, requiring interceptors to account for atmospheric disturbances and reentry heating.

In December, the Space Force requested prototype proposals for space-based midcourse interceptors, capable of destroying ballistic missiles while they coast through space. The Pentagon has not specified the number of SBIs needed for the Golden Dome program, nor their specific design.Thes orbiting interceptors will likely function as flying fuel tanks equipped with rockets and sensor packages for target acquisition.

The Space Force and contractors like Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin have not yet revealed the interceptors’ design specifications or the total number required for the Golden Dome shield.
